a woman taking the time for herself

With the bad economy of late, things have been exhausting to me, an almost-40 single mom navigating the challenges of life – waking up early to prepare my and my son’s food for the day, attending my college classes, coming home to clean up after ourselves and my beloved cats, do my assignments, and finally juggling all these with my work from 9 pm until 3 am. Then to sleep only to wake up at 7 am and do it all over again. Suffice it to say, I am bone-tired. But as a faith-based single mom, I claim victory over all adversity.

Feeling tired is not the same as not being grateful for all the blessings my work has given my little family, and the future opportunities getting a degree would provide me. Still, I need a break. I’m sure you do, too. With this, I reassured myself of the rejuvenating power of self-care rooted in the teachings of the Bible.

Heading into the Empty Spaces

Amid the daily grind, it’s easy for a single mom to feel empty and overwhelmed. Juggling responsibilities, work, and the well-being of a 17-year-old son can leave one emotionally drained. Yet, the Bible offers comfort in Psalm 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” This verse serves as a reminder that in times of emptiness, God provides.

The Weight of the World

A tired single mom often carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. It’s in these moments that Isaiah 40:31 speaks directly to her weary heart, “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” This verse encourages the embrace of patience and faith, trusting that God’s strength will uplift her.

Finding Rest in Him

In the hustle and bustle of life, self-care can sometimes feel like a distant luxury. However, Matthew 11:28 brings a promise of rest for those who are weary, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” For a single mom, it’s a call to surrender her burdens to God, finding solace in His embrace.

Reflections on Emptiness

Acknowledging feelings of emptiness is the first step toward healing. In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, the apostle Paul speaks about being “afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” These words resonate with the struggles of a single mom, emphasizing resilience in the face of challenges.

The Importance of Self-Care

Self-care is not a selfish act; it is a necessary step towards holistic well-being. Galatians 6:9 encourages perseverance, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Taking time for oneself is an act of resilience, sowing seeds of strength that will eventually bear fruit. Doing self-care for single moms is essential so we can stay resilient.

Nurturing the Spirit

As a tired Christian single mom, nurturing the spirit becomes paramount. Proverbs 31:25 says, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” Reflecting on this verse, our single mom finds inspiration to clothe herself in strength and dignity through moments of self-care, embracing the laughter that brings light to her days.

Practical Steps Towards Self-Care

  1. Rest in His Word: Spend quiet moments meditating on scriptures that bring comfort and strength.
  2. Community Support: Seek the company of fellow believers who can offer encouragement and assistance in times of need.
  3. Time Alone with God: Set aside intentional time for prayer and reflection, allowing for a deep connection with the Creator.
  4. Healthy Boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary, prioritizing self-care without guilt.

A faith-based single mom can discover the transformative power of God’s love and the importance of nurturing her spirit. In the emptiness, she finds fulfillment, in weariness, she discovers strength, and in self-care, she experiences the grace that sustains her journey.
